Outline of the Research Committee
Title and Theme
TITLE: " Special research committee on architecture and cities in a ubiquitous computing society. "
THEME: " Ubiquitous computing/architecture, cities and environmental space in the network era "
Research Objectives

Since around 1990 there has been considerable activity in technological innovationin the area of information and communications. This has revolutionized methods of architectural design, construction and academic research, the specifications/performance required for architectural spaces, the location of buildings, the urban fabric and even the shape of our lifestyles and industrial society. Furthermore, the arrival of a “ubiquitous computing society” (where computers exist everywhere in the social and living environment) is even expected to bring about a further revolutionary transformation in individual buildings and municipal planning.

This research committee aims to set a frame to examine the changes brought by the ubiquitous computing society, to collect and organize the existing influence related to architecture and the cases here and abroad, to examine the specific changes associated with architectural/urban spaces and design, production and survey research and the possibility of these changes and finally to recommend strategies to realize and establish the desirable architectural space that forms a society in the 21st society.

Reasons of Establishment
Ubiquitous computing technology not only plays an important role in architectural, constructional and facility design, management, and maintenance operations, but is also a conspicuous part of society and lifestyle innovation. Discussions regarding this technology have been carried out by existing committee(s). However, this is research into new cutting edge territory and we believe the time has come for this institute to collaborate with experts in areas outside of this institute’s expertise (e.g. information and communications technology) to carry out cross-genre research activities and widely publicize the achievements.

Research Topics

1. Impact of technological innovations in information technology (past, present, future).
2. New technologies in architecture relating to the information and communications field.
3. Measures to revitalize cities through architecture in the ubiquitous computing society.
4. The form of architecture in the ubiquitous computing society.
